Well, I now know what
happens when a waking Carlos Beltran crosses paths with Tom Gorzelanny. And it
isn’t pretty. Last night, the Washington Nationals had a chance to push their
record to .500, but came up short, falling to the New York Mets 8-4. And the
loss was due in no small part to Beltran’s two early home runs off of
Gorzelanny, who was making his much anticipated Nationals debut.

Hah.

In many respects, the
Nationals play last night left a lot to be desired. A sketchy start by
Gorzelanny backed by another subpar Brian Broderick appearance (who the
Nationals were forced to call upon with a depleted bullpen) mixed with a bad
Jerry Hairston error and stranding 17 runners doomed the team. If the Nationals
want to take the series today, they are going to need today’s starter Jason
Marquis to pitch deeper into the game than Nats starters have been going and
the offense is going to have to be more opportunistic.

Game 8 Natties

Game Ball(s): Carlos Beltran. Still has the bat if
the body cooperates.

Goat(s): Rick Ankiel. Left seven ducks on the
pond. Seven. Even PETA was pleased.

Bryce Harper is a ways off: Did you hear Harper got two hits in his
first game?

Current Record: 3-5
